Summary:
The study analysed metaphor usage in online forum discussions about depersonalization/derealization by examining linguistic signals that indicate metaphorical language. The research found that forum users employed unique, personal metaphors to describe their experiences. This method helped identify new metaphorical patterns without relying solely on pre-existing assumptions, potentially offering a more accurate representation of how people naturally describe these experiences. Particular attention was reserved for the words dream, fog, robot, bubble, and veil.
Analysing how people describe depersonalization/derealization online could help mental health professionals diagnose it better, by quickly associating certain expressions with the condition.
